The overall objective of the METRASYS project is to develop sustainable mobility concepts for those urban agglomerations which are characterized as mega cities and which evolve in countries with high economic dynamic. China is one example for this kind of economic and urban dynamic. The sustainable mobility concepts are based on the following elements:

  • Strategic approaches of urban and transportation which focus on the satisfaction of different mobility needs as well as on sustainability
  • Innovative technologies for vehicles and traffic management
  • Integrated approaches of transportation planning.

In Jiading District, promising solutions are to be implemented and should be showcase for other urban areas. Shanghai's local government as well local governments in Shanghai's metropolitan area has developed ambitious economic development plans. One challenge of these plans is the development of sustainability concepts as well as the implementation of those concepts. The METRASYS project aims at developing sustainable mobility concepts which are to be developed in due consideration of the local context. Thus, Chinese partners are strongly involved in the METRASYS project and closely collaborating with the German partners. Once developed and implemented in China, the sustainable mobility concepts are open to transfer to other countries.

During the orientation and planning phase, one work package was the analysis of the political, social and economic conditions as well as a feasibility study of sustainable mobility concepts and technological solutions. Those were based on a close cooperation and knowledge exchange between the Chinese and German partners.

Scientific and economic objectives

Generally, China is very open-minded to modern technologies. But, the challenge of developing sustainable mobility concepts is the integration of different user needs and demands, low purchasing power and technical solutions into a planning and political framework, which supports sustainable development. Additionally, the sustainable mobility concepts should be transferable to other Chinese regions and mega cities in different parts of the world. In order to provide the stability of concept, special attention will be given to knowledge for self-sustained production and maintenance of technologies, planning tools and procedures.
